[edit] Writing

The song was an attempt at an R&B recording, and was the group's first instrumental since signing to EMI in 1962. The song, although recorded for Rubber Soul, was not released until 1996, when an edited version of it's almost seven minutes was included on Anthology 2. The song was possinly recorded in case Rubber Soul did not reach the full fourteen songs. After The Beatles had broken up, it had been rumored that Rubber Soul was intended to have an intrumental title track. This is quite possibly that track. Only Ringo and John have publicly commented on the song. John was asked in a radio interview if these were any unissued Beatles recordings, and he replied all that he could remember was "some lousy twelve-bar." Ringo said to a jounalist, "We all wrote the track and I have an acetate of one of the versions."

[edit] Recording

It was recorded on November 4, 1965, after What Goes On was recorded in one take. It was rehearsed, and then recorded in two takes. A mono mix was made on November 30, 1965, only three days before Rubber Soul's UK release, far too late to be included on the album. It is unknown why they made the acetate, although The Beatles all got their own private acetates.
