A Beginning is an instrumental orchestral piece originally intended to be an intro to Don't Pass Me By.

After it was decided that the song would not be used, a similar piece was used in the Yellow Submarine movie right before the Eleanor Rigby sequence. It was put on Anthology 3 in the place of a third reunion single, which was planned to be Now and Then, but Now and Then had technical problems, so it was not used. There was little or no involvement from the band on this track. It was composed and scored by George Martin. It was recorded on July 22, 1968, using the same orchestra that recorded Good Night.
