[edit] Writing

It is not known exactly what And Your Bird Can Sing is about. There is speculation that it was about the 'rivalry' between The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Although th two bands were friends, Lennon always thought that The Rolling Stones were copying them. The 'bird' is thought to be [[Marianne Faithfull], Rolling Stone Mick Jagger's longtime girlfriend. Lennon never revealed exactly what the song was about, so it may never be known. Similar to Rain, And Your Bird Can Sing contained 'knowledge' John had gained through LSD. John later called the song "a horror" and a "throwaway." Paul claims to have helped with the song, saying, "And Your Bird Can Sing was John's song. I suspect that I helped with the verses because the songs were nearly always written without second and third verses. I seem to remember working on that middle eight with him but it's John's song, 80-20 to John."

[edit] Recording

The Beatles began work on And Your Bird Can Sing on April 20, 1966. Two takes of the basic track were recorded, including guitar and drums. Afterwards, they overdubbed three lead vocal tracks from John, backing vocals from Paul and George, and tambourine and bass. They did not use this version, not releasing it until 1996's Anthology 2. They recorded Takes 3-13 on April 26, with Take 10 considered best. They overdubbed vocals and more instruments, therefore completing the song.
