[edit] Writing

John Lennon told Playboy in 1980 that Any Time at All was "an effort at writing It Won't Be Long - same ilk. C to A minor, C to A minor with me shouting." On April 8, 1988, John's original handwritten lyrics were auctioned off a Sotheby's for £6,000. John's original lyrics featured two extra verses, including one with the lines "I'll be waiting here all alone/Just like I've always done." He left these out because he felt they did not advance the song.

[edit] Recording

This song was the last one recorded for A Hard Day's Night. When John brought it into the studio on June 2, 1964, it was still not completely finished. They recorded seven takes of the basic track and also John's vocal overdubs. Because the song was still unfinished, they recorded Things We Said Today and When I Get Home, until they returned to Any Time at All between 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM. They recorded four more takes, the last of which was overdubbed onto piano, guitar and vocals. A mono mix was made on June 4, but this one was not used. Instead, two new mixes, one mono and one stereo, were made on June 22. Because it was not fully composed, there were no lyrics for the middle eight. Paul McCartney suggested playing some piano chords to later overdub lyrics onto. These lyrics were never written, and the piano chords remained without lyrics, making the final version.
