[edit] Writing

John Lennon wrote most of the song, with a little help from Paul McCartney. Some reliable sources say that it was played during the 1960 rehearsals at Paul's house. Other sources say, however, that it was not even written until Spring of 1962. This means that either one of the sources are wrong or each one is referring to an unrelated song of the same title. Paul recalls in his authorized biography, Many Years From Now, "It was John's original idea and we both sat down and wrote it together, just did a job on it. It was mostly John's." The song was influenced by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles. In fact, the opening guitar motif is inspired by the 1961 song What's So Good About Goodbye.

[edit] Recordng

The Beatles first professionally recorded it on June 6, 1962, during their debut session with EMI, when they recorded an unknown number of takes. This recording was not considered for release, so the master tapes were destroyed. A remake of the song was done on November 26, 1962, during the Please Please Me single session. It took six takes to perfect.
