| Location | Lancashire |
In order to make the Beatles career more successful, Brian Epstein needed to get the band a recording contract. Besides that and getting them to play at better clubs, another step was to play on a BBC Radio show. on January 10, he gave the BBC a three-page "Application For An Audition By Variety Department." After the application was approved, The Beatles travelled to the BBC Broadcasting House on this date to audition for teen radio programs producer, Peter Pilbeam. In this audition, four songs were performed, Paul's Like Dreamers Do and Till There Was You. John sang a cover of Chuck Berry's Memphis, Tennessee and John's song Hello Lttle Girl. These performances are believed not to have been recorded. Pilbeam wrote his opinions on the back of the application. He gave a 'No' for Paul and a 'Yes' for John. Also written on the application was "An unusual group, not as 'Rocky' as most, more C&W with a tendency to play music." His final decision was this, "Yes. Booked for TT's 7 March 1962." The Beatles had passed the audition and would indeed record the radio program Teensger's Turn on March 7, 1962. A contract to back up his approval was issued on February 20.
