Paul recalls, "[Good Day Sunshine] was really very much a nod to The Lovin' Spoonful's Daydream, the same traditional, almost trad-jazz feel. That was our favourite record of theirs. Good Day Sunshine was me trying to write something similar to Daydream. John and I wrote it together at Kenwood, but it was basically mine, and he helped me with it."

Good Day Sunshine was first recorded on June 8, 1966, when three takes of the basic track were recorded after numerous rehearsals. Take 1 was considered the best, so Paul's lead vocals and John and George's backing vocals were overdubbed onto this. They returned to the song the next day, when drums from Ringo, piano from George Martin, more harmony vocals, and handclaps from all four Beatles were added.
