Writing
I'll Be On My Way is an example of early, inexperienced songwriting from Paul McCartney, rhyming "moonlight" with "June light." It features, boh musically and lyrically, a strong Buddy Holly influence. John Lennon recalled, "That's Paul, through and through. Doesn't it sound like him? Tra la la la la [laughs]. Yeah, that's Paul on the voids of driving through the country." Even though it was a large part of their live performances in 1961, it was not played at their unsuccessful audition at Decca Records, nor was it played at their first session at Abbey Road Studios, suggesting that it had fallen out of the group's favorites by 1962. Paul said of the song in his authroized biography, Many Years From Now, "It's a little bit too June-moon for me, but these were very early songs and they worked out quite well."
Recording
The only known recorded Beatles version of I'll Be On My Way was recorded on April 4, 1963, for the BBC Light program Side By Side. They recorded five songs for this broadcast at BBC Paris Studio in London. The program would be broadcast on June 24.

The Dakotas, another Epstein-managed act, were also signed to Parlophone. They recorded I'll Be On My Way at Abbey Road Studios on March 14, 1963, with George Martin as the producer.
