Writing

I'll Cry Instead was originally going to be featured in the film A Hard Day's Night during the sequence where The Beatles are playing in a field. Director Dick Lester thought this song did not fit the mood, and instead used Can't Buy Me Love. It was restored for an opening collage in the film's 1986 reissue. John told Playboy in 1980, "I wrote that for A Hard Day's Night, but Dick Lester didn't even want it. He resurrected Can't Buy Me Love for that sequence instead. I like the middle-eight to that song, though." In this song, John's writing has the misogyny that would later be less obviously express in Run For Your Life. It also contains his feelings of insecurity, which would later be expressed in Help! and You've Got to Hide Your Love Away. John's wife, Cynthia Lennon, would later say that songs like this were about "the frustration he felt at that time. He was the idol of millions, but the freedom and fun of the early days had gone." The music was inspired by Country, which was a style that all The Beatles, especially Ringo liked.

Recording

I'll Cry Instead was recorded on June 1, 1964, when Slow Down and Matchbox were also recorded. The Beatles recorded I'll Cry Instead in two parts, the first completed in six takes, the second in two. These parts were edited together on June 4.
