Writing

I've Just Seen A Face was, like many of McCartney's songs around this era, composed in the music room of Jane Asher, McCartney's then-girlfriend's, parents' house on Wimpole Street in London. Because McCartney's aunt liked it, the song was briefly known as Auntie Jin's Theme until the lyrics were completely written. McCartney recalled in his authorized biography, Many Years From Now, "It was slightly country and western from my point of view. It was faster, though, it was a strange uptempo thing. I was quite pleased with it. The lyric works: it keeps dragging you forward, it keeps pulling you to the next line, there's an insistent quality to it that I liked." The song was well-received by Capitol's A&R department, leading the US department to cut the song from Help! and put it as the opening track of Rubber Soul in the US.

Recording

I've Just Seen A Face was recorded in six takes on June 14, 1965. They overdubbed maracas onto the last of these takes. This song is unusual for an early Beatles song because it contains no bass part. Also recorded in this session were Yesterday and I'm Down.
