Writng
The song was written mainly by John, with help from Paul. They were especially proud of the word play in the songwith 'be long' and 'belong.' Paul once said: "We both liked to try and get a bit of double meaning in, so that was the high spot of writing that particular song. John mainly sang it so I expect that it was his original idea but we both sat down and wrote it together."
Recording
The song was recorded on July 30, the second day of recording for "With The Beatles." On this day, there were two album recording sessions with a BBC recording session for Saturday Club in between. In the first session, the first ten takes were recorded. Seven more were recorded in the second session, along with five edit pieces, numbered 18 to 23. The master take was an edit of Take 17 and edit piece 21. There is a small editing error in the song right around the 1:09 mark where John's guitar part is cut off even though he keeps playing.
