Julia Lennon, John Lennon's mother was killed when hit by a car driven by an off-duty, drunk, police officer who was named Eric Clague. This experience makes John more bitter and cynical about life. Eventually, Clague was acquitted of the offence. Clague stated, "Mrs Lennon just ran straight out in front of me. I just couldn't avoid her. I was not speeding, I swear it. It was just one of those terrible things that happen."
