Writing

The song was written in India, when The Beatles, along with several others, were studying meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

The Beatles' Version

The Beatles' version was recorded in May 1968 at Kinfauns, George's home in Esher. They recorded demos of at least 26 songs at Kinfauns in May 1968. The Beatles version became widely bootlegged in the 1970's, the bootleg copy lasting 2:25. It wasn't until 1996 when the song was legitimately released on Anthology 3, this version lasting 2:38 and being of much better quality. A studio version of the song was never made, but McCartney did do a brief run-through sung in French-sounding gibberish during a Get Back session on January 9, 1969. This version only lasts sixteen seconds.

Paul McCartney Version

In 1970, Paul McCartney released his own solo version, on his solo debut McCartney. The four-track basic track was recorded on December 25, 1969 at McCartney's home studio. Later overdubs were added at Morgan Studios in London. It is 1:57 long. Another version, instrumental, featuring Mellotron Strings was recorded and called Singalong Junk. It was also included on the album McCartney.
