Live recordings

1957

July 6

First Reel

  • Puttin' On The Style
  • Baby, Let's Play House

In 1994, a tape was found of the Quarry Men gig that John met Paul. To promote the auction, a 30-second clip of "Puttin' On Th Style" was released to the media, however, the full song has never been heard. In 2007, a BBC radio special, called "The Day John met Paul" was aired. It aired two previously unheard clips of "Puttin' On The Style", as well as a new 18-second clip of "Baby, Let's Play House," also from the reel.

Lost Second Reel

  • Come And Go With Me
  • Cumberland Gap
  • Railroad Bill
  • Maggie Mae

It is also known that another reel was recorded. It has yet to turn up and may not exist anymore. The tracks for the second reel are not known, however, it is suggested that some of the above tracks may be on it.

Autumn

In Hunter Davies' biography, it mentions John using a tape recorder from the art school to capture him performing there. The tracks are unknown. The tape may not exist anymore.

1958

Late

  • Pick A Bale Of Cotton

In Late 1958, there was a recording made of The Quarrymen during a lunch break at The Liverpool Institute.

1959

Unknown Date

There are several concert recordings of Rory Storm and The Hurricanes during Ringo's membership. These are the first known recordings featuring Ringo Starr.

1960

June

Allan Williams recorded The Beates, as they were now called, at the Jacaranda Club. The tape was of "unlistenable" quality, which may explain why it hasn't been released or bootlegged.

1962

July

  • Hey Baby
  • If You Gotta Make a Fool Of Somebody
  • Hippy Hippy Shake
  • Please Mr. Postman
  • Roll Over Beethoven
  • Ask Me Why
  • Sharing You
  • Your Feets Too Big
  • Words Of Love
  • Till There Was You
  • Dizzy Miss Lizzie
  • I Forgot To Remember To Forget
  • Matchbox (vocal: Pete Best)
  • Shimmy Shake
  • Young Blood
  • Dream Baby

A tape, containing 18 songs recorded live at The Cavern Club in Mid-1962, was auctioned off. Paul McCartney bought it. Since it wasn't used in Anthology 1, it can be assumed that the tape quality isn't too good.

September 5

This is a recording of The Beatles at The Cavern Club. It was released in partial form in the Anthology film, albeit with Paul's voice over the recording, which was shortened, anyway.

December 25

Although the shows at the Star Club from December 25 to December 31 are heavily bootlegged, these songs have yet to surface. John introduces A Taste Of Honey as "A Waste of Money."

1964

September 18

  • I Want To Hold Your Hand
  • You Can't Do That
  • All My Loving
  • She Loves You
  • Things We Said Today
  • Roll Over Beethoven
  • Can't Buy Me Love
  • If I Fell
  • Boys
  • A Hard Day's Night
  • Twist And Shout
  • Long Tall Sally

This show at the Dallas memorial auditorium has no known recordings and is one of the few shows after they had achieved fame that is unbootlegged.

Home Recordings

Late 1957-1958

Quarry Men Rehearsals

In Late 1957 and continuing into 1958, there were some Quarry Men rehearsals at Colin Hanton's house. They were recorded by Geraldine Davies. The tape may not exist anymore.

Several reels of songs were recorded in April/May/June 1960 at Paul McCartney's home. Several of these recordings have been released on bootleg, Anthology 1 or both. However, some have not been released. Some of these are recorded-over snippets of songs. Others have appeared on bootleg (One After 909, Well, Darling, I Don't Need No Cigarette, Boy,) in edited form. Others, such as When I'm 64, Winston's Walk, Ask Me Why, and Winston's Walk are completely unreleased.

1962

Mid-1962

These songs are all demos rumored to have been recorded around this time. These songs are all early McCartney originals which were included in early setlists.

1963

Early

  • Do You Want To Know A Secret

John was originally planning to give this song to Billy J Kramer. He later said in the liner notes for Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas: The Definitive Collection "I had this tape given to me, and it was John Lennon singing it with an acoustic guitar. On the tape he said, 'I'm sorry for the sound quality, but it's the quietest room I could find in the whole building.' Then he flushed the toilet."

May/June

  • I Call Your Name

This demo, recorded along with Bad To Me for Billy J Kramer has never been bootlegged, even though the Bad To Me demo has been.

August

This song was written and recorded in 1963 by Ringo, but was not released until 1968 when The Beatles version was released.

1964

Early

Peter Asher of Peter & Gordon recalls getting a demo tape made by Paul McCartney of the song A World Without Love without the bridge. It was later covered by Peter and Gordon. Another, later, demo circulates of It's For You, but this one has not been heard.

Mid

At this point, John was considering giving this song away to another Epstein act, Tommy Quickly. John gave a demo to Quickly, who actually did record his own version, but never released it. Colin Manley, who played guitar on Quickly's cover version, told Beatles undercover that "I don't think the Anthology 1 version is the demo we heard; it's too complete. I wish it would have been the one we heard. I'd back my life that the demo we used had no middle eight; it didn't have any clue as to the rhythm we should use. It contained the sound of a toilet flushing at the end which we thought was hilarious because it was typical of John's humor. I think we were told it was recorded in a hotel room. We immediately noticed when the Beatles put it on their album Beatles for Sale that it had a middle eight."

1965

Unknown

John Lennon mentioned in his famous 1980 Playboy interview that he had an original tape of "In My Life." Although his recollections weren't always correct in this interview, he did mention in the same interview that he also had tapes of Strawberry Fields Forever and We Can Work It Out, both of which later appeared on bootlegs. It would be interesting to hear because the song is known to have gone through several changes before the final studio version. Originally, the song mentioned Liverpool landmarks by name.

Late

In the April 1966 issue of The Beatles Monthly Book, Neil Aspinall said that "when Paul wanted to show Ringo how 'What Goes On' sounded he made up a multi-track tape. Onto this went Paul singing, Paul playing lead guitar, Paul playing bass and Paul playing drums. Then Ringo listened to the finished tape and added his own ideas before the recording session."

1966

March

This song was included on the demo tape for She Said She Said, and although the She Said She Said portion of the tape has been heard by bootleggers, this part has not.

Unknown

In Many Years From Now, Paul recalls using a recording studio in his home in Montagu Square to "demo things. I'd just written 'Eleanor Rigby' and so I went down there in the basement on my days off on my own. Just took a guitar down and used it as a demo studio." A short clip of Paul singing Eleanor Rigby with a guitar circulates that might be from this era.

1968

In Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick's memoir, he mentions a demo of this song that was played back to Ringo in the studio a few times. He says "It's a shame that this particular tape has been lost to the world, and that nobody will ever hear the gorgeous way John sang his tender little song. In comparison, I really don't think Ringo did the song justice."

1969

February 25

On George's birthday in 1969, he recorded demos of three songs, Old Brown Shoe, All Things Must Pass, and Something. All three were included on Anthology 3. However, Old Brown Shoe and All Things Must Pass are known to have more than one demo take, neither of which have been heard.

Studio Recordings

1958

Spring/Summer 1958

The earliest Beatles studio recording was done in the Spring or Summer of 1958. They recorded a 78 RPM acetate of two songs, That'll Be The Day, a Buddy Holly cover, and In Spite Of All The Danger, a song written by McCartney. Both were later released in 1995 on Anthology 1. However, what was released of In Spite Of All The Danger was an edited version clocking in at 2:44. The full version is 3:25.

1960

October 15

  • Summertime
  • Fever
  • September Song

On this date, three songs were recorded at Akustic Studio in Hamburg. Ringo Starr actually participates on "Fever" and "September Song," despite the fact it would be two years before he joins the group.

1962

January 1

  • Youngblood

As mentioned in "The Beatles At The BBC" booklet, this song was recorded at their famous Decca audition, however, it is the only song know of that has not been bootlegged or released from this date.

May 24

  • Swanee River

It is believed that this song was recorded with Tony Sheridan. This was not released. Sheridan later recorded this song with another backing group, which itself is sometimes mistaken as a Beatles outtake.

June 6

During this (successful) audition for EMI, Love Me Do and Besame Mucho were recorded and later released on Anthology 1. These two other songs were recorded but not released. They may not survive anymore.

September 4

Love Me Do single session. Several rehearsals of songs were recorded. It would be interesting to hear because it has Please Please Me in it's original, slower form.

November 26

During the Please Please Me single session, these three songs were recorded. The album and single versions of Please Please Me are both composites of Takes 16-18. None have leaked in full form. Also no Ask Me Why outtakes have been heard. Tip of My Tongue was written by Lennon and McCartney and was recorded by The Beatles. They were unsatisfied with the results and gave it to Tommy Quickly instead. It proved to be a flop. Nobody has heard the Beatles version.

1963

February 11

On this day, most of Please Please Me was recorded. About half of the recordings have not been heard and it is assumed they do not exist anymore. Some of the takes listed are available on the album, but with overdubs. It is known that Hold Me Tight was first attempted on this date, but was not included on the album and was later rerecorded for With The Beatles.

February 20

These takes are George Martin's piano and celeste overdubs onto these songs. Although Take 16 of Misery and Take 5 of Baby It's You are included as part of the master takes on the album, the overdubs by themselves have not been heard.

March 13

The harmonica overdubs recorded on this day have not been released or bootlegged.

1964

February 25

Two Studio outtakes from this day, You Can't Do That Take 6 and And I Love Her Take 2 were included on Anthology 1. You Can't Do That Take 9 was included on the album A Hard Day's Night.

February 26

May 22

  • You Can't Do That

Piano Overdub.

June 1

  • I'll Be Back (Take 1, Takes 4-15)
  • Sawdust Dance Floor
  • Your True Love
  • Sure To Fall
  • Blue Suede Shoes
  • Honey Don't
  • Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby

A couple takes of I'll Be Back were included on Anthology 1. This is the day that Carl Perkins has repeatedly claimed he jammed with The Beatles. No tape has surfaced, although it's very possible that it would not have been taped. However, he has said that the session lasted until almost three in the morning. No official Beatles session had lasted until past midnight until October 13, 1965.

June 3

  • I Want To Hold Your Hand
  • She Loves You
  • I Saw Her Standing There
  • This Boy
  • Can't Buy Me Love
  • Long Tall Sally

On this date, The Beatles rehearsed with Jimmy Nichol, who temporarily replaced Ringo in tours when Ringo was getting his tonsils taken out. These may not have been recorded.

  • It's For You
  • You're My World

This is the second demo of It's For You. There is also another one which has been heard by bootleggers. The drummer on this recording is not known, though it is most likely Jimmy Nichol. You're My World is an unusual song for The Beatles to cover, seeing that they did not write it and it had just gotten to number one in the UK for Cilla Black. Supposedly, their version only lasts thirty three seconds. For reasons unknown (possibly because Ringo was absent) The Beatles did not release their own version.

Although not exactly a studio recording, more of a mix, all the original parts of this song equalled 6:12. On November 26, 1969, John edited the song down to a mono mix of 4:19. Later, a slightly longer stereo mix of the song appeared on Anthology 2, however, this is still not the full song.

  • Grow Old With Me

This song was a John Lennon demo considered for inclusion as a Beatles reunion track. All work on this track stopped until March 20, 1995.

1995

March 20-March 21

These songs were all considered for inclusion as Beatles reunion singles. On this day, overdubs for all three were recorded. Now and Then was not used because the recording had an electronic hum that could not be removed. All For Love was actually not a John Lennon demo, but a song written by McCartney and Harrison, making it their first writing credit together since 1958's In Spite Of All The Danger. Grow Old With Me was a Lennon demo attempted in 1994 and recorded again on this date. As Paul said "John's original demo required too much work."

BBC Recordings
