Short description Performance at The Cavern Club.
Location The Cavern Club, Matthew Street, Liverpool
The Cavern Club, named after Le Caveau Francais Jazz Club, was opened on January 16, 1957 by the Earl of Wharncliffe. Alan Sytner, owner of The Cavern Club, was the son of a doctor who played golf at Lee Park, the same golf club that Nigel Whalley played at, who was now an apprentice golf professional. Because of this, The Quarrymen were booked at The Cavern Club for the first time. Even though it was a jazz club at the time, skiffle was allowed because of it's jazz origins, though only rarely as anything more than an interval attraction. The Quarrymen opened with the most appropriate song of their set, Come Go With Me. Afterwards, John Lennon followed with Elvis Presley's Hound Dog and Blue Suede Shoes. These two irreverent song choices were met with disdain from The Quarrymen's folk purist Rod Davis and from Alan Sytner, who passed a note saying "Cut out the bloody rock!" to the stage. Paul McCartney did not perform on this date because he was at scout camp.
