Short description Carroll Levis Star Search audition. First official gig of The Quarrymen.
Location Empire Theatre, Lime Street, Liverpool
The Quarrymen's first official gig was on June 9, 1957, for Carroll Levis' "TV Star Search." This program, held all over England, served as not onlt entertainment for people attending, but also provided Levis with talent for his TV program. Because of this many acts, mostly unpaid, auditioned for him. These included ventriloquists, budgerigars, jugglers, musical saw players, and, especially around 1957, skiffle groups. The Quarrymen didn't even qualify from this 3:00 PM preliminary audition. It was instead won by the Sunnyside Skiffle Group, which featured 19-year-old 4 foot 6 inch Nicky Cuff on vocals and tea chest bass. Literally, becuase Cuff had to stand on the tea chest while playing it. The twice-nightly finals were held between June 17 and June 23, albeit without The Quarrymen.
