Early Beatles Performances

The Beatles had performed Long Tall Sally since 1957, when the band was still called The Quarrymen. They would perform it live until August 1966, when The Beatles played their final formal live performance, making it the song that spent the longest time in The Beatles' set list. John Lennon said of the song, "Little Richard was one of the all-time greats. The first time I heard him a friend of mine had been to Holland and brought back a 78 with Long Tall Sally on one side, and Slippin' And Slidin' on the other. It blew our heads - we'd never heard anybody sing like that in our lives and all those saxes playing like crazy." The Beatles had actually played with Little Richard in the early 1960's in Hamburg and England. Paul McCartney was especially proud of his ability to imitate Little Richard's vocals. McCartney recalls, "One of the things I didn't like about the film Backbeat is that they gave Long Tall Sally to the John character. I was not amused. I always sang that: me and Little Richard."

Recording

The earliest recorded version of Long Tall Sally was a recording for BBC Radio made on April 1, 1963. A version recorded on July 16, 1963 and broadcast on August 13, 1963 is included on the 1994 collection Live At The BBC. The Beatles would record six versions for BBC Radio between April 1, 1963 and July 17, 1964. The recorded version of Long Tall Sally was recorded during the A Hard Day's Night sessions, and it is very possible that the song was considered for the "concert" scene at the end of the film A Hard Day's Night. It is likely, however, that they had more than enough songs for that scene and this song was not included. They recorded it in one take on March 1, 1964, possibly because they had become so familiar with the song by that point. Also during this 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM session, they recorded I'm Happy Just To Dance WIth You and I Call Your Name. The Beatles made another recording of Long Tall Sally especially for the ITV special Around The Beatles on August 19, 1964. This version is included on Anthology 1.

Release

The Beatles' version of Long Tall Sally was released on the EP Long Tall Sally. In the United States, it had been released two months earlier on The Beatles' Second Album. In Canada, it was first released on The Beatles' Long Tall Sally.
