Shortly before the song was recorded, John and Yoko had gotten into a motorcycle accident. This was the first time, on July 9, that John had been back. He had recovered from the accident, but his wife Yoko still could not get out of bed. At this point, John and Yoko wanted to be together all of the time, so he had a bed wheeled into the studio for her. Originally, Paul thought it had the potential to be a single, and all The Beatles deadfully recorded several takes, though both John and George have expressed dislike for the song. George said, "We spent a hell of a lot of time on it and it’s one of those instant, whistle-along tunes which some people like and others really hate. It’s quite like Honey Pie, I suppose, a fun song, but it’s pretty sick because Maxwell keeps on killing people." John, however, expressed much more hate for the song, "I hate it, because all I remember is the track – he made us do it a hundred million times. He did everything to make it into a single and it never was and never could have been." Paul defended the song "I got some grief about it, because it took three days to do. But do you know how long Trevor Horn takes to do a mix for Frankie Goes To Hollywood? It takes two days to switch on the Fairlight! I had a group in the other day, and they spent two days trying to find the ON switch!" On that first day it was recorded, July 9, 21 takes plus overdubs were recorded. The next day, July 10, more overdubs were recorded. On July 11, even more were recorded. Work was completed on the song on August 6, when the Moog synthesizer overdubs were recorded.
