John Lennon Version

John Lennon recorded Now And Then in demo form in his apartment building, The Dakota, in New York City around 1979. This was during a five-year break John took from making music to care for his son Sean. This version, recorded on a cassette tape, featured just John's vocals and piano. This version is available through bootlegs.

The Beatles' Version

During 1994 and 1995, The Beatles recorded overdubs onto old John Lennon demo tapes given to them by Yoko Ono, producing a Beatles "reunion" single. Yoko had given them two cassettes full of unfinished Lennon songs in 1994, many of which were considered as reunion singles. Among these were Free As A Bird, Real Love, Grow Old With Me, and Now And Then. On March 20 and March 21, 1995, The Beatles recorded several overdubs for this song, but it was abandoned on March 21. Paul McCartney had said they had given it up because George Harrison "didn't want to do it," possibly because the song needed much more writing. Also, there was a buzzing sound on the tape that was impossible to remove at the time. Producer Jeff Lynne recalls, "It was one day - one afternoon, really - messing with it. The song had a chorus but is almost totally lacking in verses. We did the backing track, a rough go that we really didn't finish." They had considered it as a third reuinion single, but it was not used and instead of a new reunion single opening up Anthology 3, A Beginning, an unused intro for Don't Pass Me By, was included instead. Several unconfirmed reports have been circulated since 2006 that Paul was considering finishing the song by using George's original overdubs and him and Ringo recording new parts.
