Short description Recording Session. Songs Recorded: Matchbox, I'll Cry Instead, Slow Down, and I'll Be Back.
Location Abbey Road Studios

With the film A Hard Day's Night completed and after The Beatles had taken their holidays, the band took three days to record the non-soundtrack side of the LP A Hard Day's Night, as well as other songs that would later be put aside for the Long Tall Sally EP. The Beatles recorded from 2:30 to 7:15 PM and again from 8:00 to 11:15 PM. These sessions started with five takes of Matchbox, a part of The Beatles' stage act. The recording of Matchbox was unusual for most Beatles songs in that the final vocal was attempted in each take, rather than being overdubbed later. Ringo Starr chose to drum and sing at the same time. Next, the band recorded I'll Cry Instead, taped in two sections, 'Section A' and 'Section B.' 'Section A' was recorded in six takes and 'Section B' was recorded in two takes, with the intention of the two being later edited together. Slow Down, a 1958 Larry Williams song, was then recorded in six takes. Takes 1-3 were the basic rhythm track, with takes 4-6 being John Lennon's vocal overdubs. Piano would later be overdubbed on June 4. After a short break, I'll Be Back was recorded in sixteen takes. The first nine takes were the rhythm track and the last seven were the double-tracked vocals and acoustic guitar overdubs.

Carl Perkins

Carl Perkins, who originally wrote Matchbox visited The Beatles in the studio during this session. Perkins, a major influence on The Beatles, was in England for a promotional tour. There is a great deal of speculation that Perkins and The Beatles jammed at the end of this session. Perkins himself has claimed that he jammed with The Beatles after the session. Though the song list varied with each time he recollected the story, ones he often mentioned were Blue Suede Shoes, Honey Don't, Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby, Your True Love, Sawdust Dance Floor, and others. No recording of this has surfaced on either official release or bootleg, though it is likely that the collaboration was not recorded. This theory is supported by Perkins' claim that the session lasted until three o'clock in the morning, meaning that the jamming was highly unofficial and was likely not taped.
