Short description Mixing and Recording Session. Songs Mixed: Blue Jay Way. Songs Recorded: Shirley's Wild Accordion.
Location Abbey Road Studios

From 6:00 PM to 2:00 AM, in Studio Three of Abbey Road Studios (although the session was originally scheduled to be at Olympic Sound Studios), John Lennon supervised the mixing of Blue Jay Way mixed into mono and edited. Afterwards, accordion player Shirley Evans and musical partner/percussionist Reg Wale recorded a Lennon/McCartney composition, Shirley's Wild Accordion, arranged by Mike Leander. This was the second time in seven months that he had been employed by The Beatles. Fifteen takes were recorded of this song, with Ringo and Paul adding musical assistance. The tenth was marked best so it was overdubbed onto with more accordion. It was then mixed into mono. It was under consideration to include this in the soundtrack. It was never used, although Shirley Evans does appear in the film, playing accordion in the coach singalong sequence near the end. The Magical Mystery Tour film does contain one piece of incidental music performed by one or more of the Beatles (though most likely only Lennon). This piece, with writing credit towards all four Beatles, is called Jessie's Dream and is heard during the sequence where John, dressed as a waiter, is shoveling spaghetti onto a Ringo's Aunt Jessie's plate. This was recorded prvately and not at EMI.
