[edit] The Beatles' Version

The Beatles were huge fans of Chuck Berry's music. In fact, they covered more songs by Chuck Berry than any other artist from 1957 to 1966, when they stopped recording covers. This lead John to say "If they want things like Sally and Beethoven, we can do that standing on our ears." Most Chuck Berry covers done by The Beatles were sung by John. This song, in fact, was sung by John from 1957 until 1961. From 1961 until they dropped the song from the set in 1964, George Harrison sang lead, singing on the recording. This song was one of George's three vocal leads on With The Beatles, along with Devil In Her Heart and Don't Bother Me. George said, "I sang Roll Over Beethoven for With The Beatles - it was a song I liked. I had the Chuck Berry record and I used to sing it in the clubs."
