[edit] Writing
The idea for a reprise of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was suggested by Beatles road manager Neil Aspinall, who suggested that the beginning and end of the album should feature words from the Lonely Hearts Club Band's fictional compere. Aspinall recalls, "I said to Paul, 'Why don't you have Sgt Pepper as the compere of the album? He comes on at the beginning of the show and introduces the band, and at the end he closes it. A bit later, Paul told John about it in the studio, and John came up to me and said, 'Nobody likes a smart-arse, Neil'... That was when I knew that John liked it and that it would happen."
[edit] Recording
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Repirse) was the last new music recorded for the album, save for a strings overdub onto Within You Without You. It was recorded on April 1, 1967. First, nine takes of the basic track were recorded. Take five of these nine takes was included on the 1996 compilation Anthology 2. This take includes a guide vocal by Paul McCartney. After they recorded the basic track, The Beatles overdubbed vocals and additional instrumentation onto take nine. Even though Abbey Road Studios only had four-track tape machines at the time, the reprise of Sgt. Pepper was the only song on the album not to have used any reduction mixes. The crossfade into A Day In The Life was done on April 6, which required three tape machines to carry out.
[edit] LOVE Mix
A mix of this song was included on the 2006 Beatles remix album LOVE. It does not greatly differ from the original version, though the intro of the song includes orchestra parts from Hey Jude and the mix of the song does not include the crossfade into A Day In The Life.
