| Short description | Stuart Sutcliffe leaves for Hamburg, basically leaving the band. |

Stuart Sutcliffe leaves for Hamburg to see Astrid Kircherr and continue his art studies, esentially leaving the band. With Stuart gone, someone needed to take up the bass, Paul recalled, "So then, it was like, ‘Uh-oh! We haven’t got a bass player now,’ so everyone turned round and looked at me. I was a bit lumbered with the bass playing, really. I was playing piano and didn’t even have a guitar at the time, so I couldn’t really say that I wanted to be a guitarist." He could not afford a new bass, so he took his old Rosetti and put piano strings on it. "All of these clubs would wonder what had gone wrong with their pianos. We had some pliers and it was: ‘All right lads, quick it’s an A – which is the A?’ Dong, dong! And we’d just nick an A-string. You’d be surprised how well they work."
