Original Version
Carl Perkins first recorded the song in December 1956 at the Memphis studio owned by Sun Records founder Sam Phillips. It was released as a single in 1957 as a follow-up to Blue Suede Shoes.
The Beatles' Version
The Beatles, at the time playing as The Quarrymen, first covered the song in 1957 and continued until 1962. The first recorded version is from the failed January 1, 1962 audition for Decca Records. On this recording, only available on bootlegs, Paul McCartney's voice sounds somewhat shaky. John Lennon recalled, "We did all these numbers and we were terrified and nervous. You can hear it on the bootlegs. It starts off terrifying and gradually settles down. We were still together musically. You can hear it's primitive, you know, and it isn't recorded that well, but the power's there. It was the tracks that we were doing onstage in the dance halls." A slower, more confident version of the song was performed on June 1, 1963 at the BBC Paris Theatre in London for the BBC Radio program Pop Goes The Beatles. This version, first broadcast on June 18, 1963, was included on the 1994 compilation Live at the BBC. The Beatles performed Sure To Fall three more times for the BBC. The next was on September 3, 1963 at the Aeolian Hall, London. This was for the fifteenth and final broadcast of Pop Goes The Beatles. It was broadcast on September 24. On March 31, 1964, they played the song again for the Saturday Club program. This was recorded at the Playhouse Theatre in London and was broadcast on April 4. Unlike the previous versions, this one switched into double time during the bridge. The final BBC performance was on May 1, 1964 at the BBC Paris Studio in London. This was done for the From Us To You show and was broadcast on May 18. Like the version before, the bridges were played in double time. The Beatles did not play the song again until January 6, 1969 in a Get Back session. This version was much slower than all previous versions and was sung by both John and Paul.
