Writing
Tell Me What You See was originally suggested for inclusion in the film Help!. Director Richard Lester deemed it unsuitable for the film and it instead was released on the non-soundtrack side of the Help! LP in the UK and on Beatles VI in the US. Paul McCartney would later describe the song as a 'work song.' He recalled, "I seem to remember it as mine. I would claim it as a 60-40 but it might have been totally me. Not awfully memorable. Not one of the better songs but they did a job, they were very handy for albums or b-sides. You need those kind of sides." Coincidentally or not, some lines in this song resemble lines previously included in the earlier Beatles song And I Love Her, also written by McCartney. In And I Love Her, the lines are:
"Bright are the stars that shine
Dark is the sky
I know this love of mine
Will never die"
In Tell Me What You See, the lines are:
"Big and black the clouds may be
Time will pass away
If you put your trust in me
I'll make bright your day"
