Writing
Tell Me Why was written specifically for the concert scene at the end of the film A Hard Day's Night. John told Playboy in 1980, "They needed another song - an upbeat song - so I just knocked it off." Although John had claimed it as little more than a throwaway, Paul believes the song was written more autobiographically. "I think a lot of these songs like Tell Me Why may have been based in real experiences or affairs John was having or arguments with Cynthia or whatever, but it never occurred to us until later to put that slant on it all."
Recording
The song was recorded on February 27, 1964 in eight takes. They also recorded And I Love Her and If I Fell in this session.

In The Film A Hard Day's Night
The Beatles lip-synched to this song for a "live performance" in front of 350 fans at the end of the film A Hard Day's Night. This was filmed at the Scala Theatre in London on March 31, 1964. John said in 1964, "There are four I really go for [in the film]: Can't Buy Me Love, If I Fell, I Should Have Known Better - a song with harmonica we feature during the opening train sequence - and Tell Me Why, a shuffle number that comes at the end of the film." For some reason, John's vocals are different than both the mono and stereo mixes included on the albums.
