[edit] John's first band
Since May 1956, John, having watched Elvis Presley's HeartBreak Hotel had been thrilled by rock'n'roll music.
In March 1957, he persuaded his Aunt Mimi to buy him a £17 guitar and formed a skiffle group with his best friend Pete Shotton. The group was named The Black Jacks.
Pete and John both attended the Quarry Bank High School for Boys and since the school song contained the line Quarry Men, strong before our birth, they decided, one week after having formed The Black Jacks, to rename themselves The Quarrymen.
[edit] Other bands named The Black Jacks
It is clear that, with such a unoriginal name, many amateur groups called themselves The Black Jacks. In fact, one of these bands was Pete Best's first band (September 1959-August 1960) right before he would be invited to join The Beatles.
