Writing
There's A Place is one of the few Lennon/McCartney songs to feature equal contribution from both John Lennon and Paul McCartney. It was written at Paul McCartney's home on 20 Forthlin Road in Liverpool. It was based loosely off the song Somewhere from the soundtrack to West Side Story, which Paul McCartney owned. Lennon recalled, "In our case the place was in the mind, rather than round the back of the stairs for a kiss and a cuddle. This was the difference with what we were writing: we were getting a bit more cerebral. We both sang it. I took the high harmony, John took the lower harmony or melody. This was a nice thing because we didn't actually have to decide where the melody was till later when they boringly had to write it down for sheet music."
Recording
There's A Place was the first song to be recorded on the February 11, 1963 session that saw the recording of most of Please Please Me. It was recorded in ten takes with a harmonica overdub later in the session. It was recorded in the first of three sessions that day, along with I Saw Her Standing There. This first session took place from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The ten takes were recorded in Studio Two of Abbey Road Studios and nine takes of I Saw Her Standing There, then titled Seventeen, were recorded afterwards.
