Short description First Beatles appearance on Val Parnell's Sunday Night At The London Palladium.
Location London Palladium, Argyll Street, London

This was The Beatles' first booking with Associated TeleVision, an ITV company. They were on Val Parnell's Sunday Night At The London Palladium, a top-rated TV show broadcast live from 8:25 to 9:25 PM to fifteen million viewers. The Beatles, topping the bill on this night, gained national attention from this TV appearance. The London Palladium, known as the "Home Of The Stars," had never witnessed so many screaming fans both inside and outside the theatre. The fans outside blocked Argyll Street. This provided photographers with pictures for the front page of the newspaper the next morning. In fact, it was the next morning that the term Beatlemania was coined by Fleet Street writers. Against tradition, The Beatles, who topped the bill, appeared at the very beginning of the show, albeit for a few seconds. Compere Bruce Forsyth then announced, "If you want to see them again they'll be back in forty-two minutes." When they came back to close the hour-long show, Forsyth counted down above the screams "5-4-3-2-1" before The Beatles began playing From Me To You. Afterwards, The Beatles performed their usual stage routine (they had a rehearsal the night before). Paul tried to introduce I'll Get You, but John sent him up. John, Paul, and George all tried to introduce She Loves You. They stopped and restarted, but George ended up announcing the song. Paul then tried to introduce the closing number, with John telling the screaming fans to "Shut up!", causing the adults in the audience to applaud. Paul asked people to clap their hands and stomp their feet, to which John did spastic imitations (this can be seen on The Beatles Anthology DVD). The group finished with Twist And Shout. The ended as usual with the bill-toppers being joined onstage by the other acts, in this case Brook Benton, Des O'Connor, and host Bruce Forsyth, waving at the audience and cameras while the Jack Parnell Orchestra performed "Startime," the theme song. The Beatles were becoming a phenomenon and the TV appearance was even covered by the late-night ITN news, which had cameras in the group's dressing room.
