Writing

Wait was written and recorded originally for the album Help!. It was left off the final album, and it was brought back nearly five months later during the last session for Rubber Soul. It was written in the Bahamas, while The Beatles were filming their film Help!. Paul McCartney remembers writing it in front of actor and former child star Brandon de Wilde. McCartney recalls, "He was a nice guy who was fascinated by what we did. A sort of Brat Pack actor. We chatted endlessly, and I seem to remember writing Wait in front of him, and him being interested to see it being written. I think it was my song. I don't remember John collaborating too much on it, although he could have." It is not known why The Beatles didn't use Wait for the Help! soundtrack, though it is possible it was dropped in favor of Dizzy Miss Lizzy. When the group needed a fourteenth song for Rubber Soul, they added more percussion, vocals and guitar to make it sound more like a late 1965 Beatles recording.

Recording

Four takes of Wait were recorded on June 17, 1965, only the last of which was complete. This basic track included guitars, drums, and bass, along with lead vocals shared by Lennon and McCartney. On November 11, they added more vocals, a volume-pedal guitar, tambourine, and maracas.
