Recording
You Know What To Do was George Harrison's second composition for the group, after Don't Bother Me. The only recording known for sure to exist is a demo recorded on June 3, 1964. The Beatles intended to record a fourteenth and final song for A Hard Day's Night that afternoon, the identity of which is unknown. However, Ringo Starr had fallen ill with tonsillitis and pharyngitis. Instead, drummer Jimmy Nicol was brought in for a 3:00 to 4:00 PM rehearsal to fill Ringo's spot during the band's 1964 world tour. Afterwards, the band recorded three demos in a 5:30 to 9:00 PM session. You Know What To Do, as well as It's For You (a Paul McCartney composition for Cilla Black), and No Reply (a John Lennon composition that would later appear on Beatles For Sale). The exact line-up on the song is not completely known. There is speculation that George Harrison recorded all the instruments on the demo, though it is more likely that John Lennon and Paul McCartney also participated in the recording. In the 1970's and early 1980's, it was rumored that this song was recorded in more complete form during the Beatles For Sale sessions in September or October 1964. However, this is highly unlikely, as it is not mentioned as being recorded then in more accurate recent books.

Release
Though the song was copyrighted the day before by Jaep Music, a publishing company founded by Brian Epstein and Dick James, You Know What To Do was not released until 1995's Anthology 1. The existence of the tape was discovered in 1991, when evidence of the session was discovered. The tape itself was rediscovered in 1993. It had been misfiled.
