The Beatles' Cover
The Beatles' version of You Really Got a Hold On Me was the first song recorded for their then-untitled second album. For their cover, they slightly changed the title, changing it from You've Really Got a Hold On Me. Their version featured John Lennon on lead vocals, George Harrison on harmonies, and Paul McCartney on backing vocals. Paul commented, "A lot of our tracks may not have been 'cool'. I think if we'd just been cool, we wouldn't have made it how we did. But that was a great aspect of us. John would do A Shot Of Rhythm And Blues or You Really Got A Hold On Me - you could call that cool." The song was not a huge hit in the UK at the time. In fact, The Beatles only knew about it from imported copies of the single. George said of You Really Got a Hold On Me and the second album, "The second album was slightly better then the first, inasmuch as we spent more time on it, and there were more original songs. We did Money for that album, and other cover versions: Please Mister Postman, You Really Got A Hold On Me and Devil In Her Heart."
Recording
The earliest recorded Beatles version is from an edition of the BBC Radio show Pop Goes The Beatles, recorded on May 24, 1963 and broadcast on June 4. The Beatles would also record it for the BBC on July 16, July 30, and September 3, 1963 for BBC Radio. The version from July 30 is included on the 1994 album Live at the BBC. The studio version recorded for With The Beatles was recorded on July 18, 1963, during the first session of recording for the album, where they also recorded Money (That's What I Want, Devil In Her Heart, and Till There Was You. They started recording with seven formal takes of this song, only four of which were complete. Afterwards, they recorded four edit pieces, numbered Taks 8-11. These included the overdubbing of the word "baby" onto the song as well as the instrumental coda at the end of the song. The final version is an edit of Takes 7, 10, and 11. This was made on August 21, the same day that the mono mix for the entire LP was prepared. A stereo mix was made October 29, less than a month before the UK release on November 22, 1963.
